CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team fell 1-0 after the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders scored a goal in the final minute on Sunday at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
The Islanders (2-3-0) are now tied with the Vaqueros (2-3-0) at 3-3 in the showdown standings.
With the match scoreless and the clock winding down, the Islanders took a corner kick that found Reaghan Lang in the box as she snuck it past UTRGV goalie
Maile Lunardi (2-2) for the game-winner with just 43 seconds left in regulation.
The Islanders outshot the Vaqueros 12 to 10 while the Vaqueros outshot the Islanders six to four on goal.
Lunardi finished the night with three saves with Islanders goalie Kennedy Stelling saving all six shots she faced.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Wednesday, September 8, when they host Concordia University at 11 a.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The next event of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is on Sept. 12 when volleyball hosts Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
