RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team scored three first half goals on their way to a 4-0 victory over the Concordia University Tornados on Wednesday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (3-3) got the scoring started in the fourth minute as sophomore
Anna Torslov found the ball in front of the net and put past Concordia goalie Lora Tresco for her first goal of the season.
Later in the first half, junior
Emily Zapata found the corner kick from freshman
Nadia Colon and put it in the back of the net in the 20
th minute giving the Vaqueros the 2-0 lead. The goal is the first for Zapata this season and is the 26
thgoal of her career, which puts her one shy of the program record.
Freshman
Molly Reynosa made it 3-0 in the 28
th minute with her first goal of the season as she picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net with her left foot.
In the second half, junior
Ana Recarte-Pacheco added the final touches on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season when she got the ball in the box off a corner kick and snuck it into the goal giving the Vaqueros the 4-0 advantage.
Junior
Macie Blohowiak (1-1) and freshman
Karime Benavides combined for the shutout with Blohowiak coming up with two saves.
Tresco finished the match with five saves.
UTRGV outshot Concordia (0-2) 24 to two and nine to two on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Friday when they host the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
