RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Playing their third game in five days, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Sam Houston Bearkats 66-52 on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Graduate student
Taylor Muff led the Vaqueros (7-11, 3-3 WAC) with a career-high 28 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Sophomore
Tiffany McGarity scored eight points with five rebounds, a career-high tying four assists and two steals.
Madelyn Batista led the Bearkats (6-12, 1-6 WAC) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Courtney Cleveland scored 16 points with eight rebounds and three steals.
Faith Cook scored 15 points with six rebounds and five assists.
The Bearkats led 4-2 early before Muff hit two layups and a jumper to help the Vaqueros go on an 8-3 run to take a 10-7 lead.
The Bearkats scored six of the next eight points before a jumper by sophomore
Sara Bershers put the Vaqueros up 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bearkats opened the second quarter by scoring 12-straight points as part of a 16
-2 run to take a 29-16 lead.
Then, with the score 31-18, Muff hit a jumper, a 3-pointer, and a layup to bring the Vaqueros within 31-25 at the half.
That was the start of a 14-2 run to bring the Vaqueros within 33-32 midway through the third quarter.
The Bearkats answered by scoring 11-straight points as part of a 15-2 run to close the quarter up 48-34.
Muff opened the fourth quarter with a jumper before the Bearkats went on an 8-2 run to push the game out of reach.
