RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the California Baptist University (CBU) Lancers in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (2-8-3, 0-3-3 WAC) got the tying goal from sophomore forward
Amy Hislop. Freshman keeper
Emma Lööv tallied three saves. CBU (5-3-3, 2-2-1 WAC) goalkeeper
Noa Schumacher made five saves, and the Lancers goal came courtesy of
Ari Coronado.
CBU took a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute off a strange goal. Coronado sent one across and it hit the right post, then the ball ricocheted to the left post and rolled into the net. Possession swayed in favor of the Lancers in the first half, but UTRGV's defense kept them from getting many shots. CBU took just three shots in the first half with two on goal including one that was saved by junior midfielder
Marcy Garza.
UTRGV created some offensive pressure in the first half thanks to redshirt junior midfielder
Elina Seppälä, sophomore midfielder
Molly Reynosa and Hislop. But Schumacher came up with three impressive saves to keep CBU in control through the first 45 minutes.
Hislop tied the match at 1-1 in the 69
th minute. Sophomore defender
Nadia Colon sent a corner kick into the box and it was headed out to Reynosa, who then headed it directly to Hislop. Hislop gathered the ball and sent a strike into the right corner of the net.
CBU picked up its attack with the score knotted, but Lööv was up for the challenge. She made two big stops in the 72
nd minute and the UTRGV defense worked hard to keep the Lancers from regaining the lead. Redshirt junior midfielder
Cami Dade and sophomore defender
Libby Beilfuss were among the Vaqueros to come up with stops on CBU attacks, and Lööv turned in another solid performance in goal.
The match was fairly even offensively, with UTRGV taking nine shots to CBU's 10. Shots on goal went 6-5 in favor of the Vaqueros. Colon, Reynosa, Hislop and Seppälä aided UTRGV's offensive effort.
UTRGV is back in action Oct. 13 at Utah Valley at 8:30 p.m.
