CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated 2-5 by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders on Tuesday in the South Texas Showdown presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.  
 
TAMUCC (9-3) won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. UTRGV (1-6) saw great composure from its No. 3 duo of junior Chris Lawrance and freshman Sam Whitehead to come back from trailing 1-3 to win their match 6-4. 
 
The Islanders clinched the match with wins in the No. 6, No. 3 and No. 4 spots, then extended their lead to 5-0 at No. 5. 
 
Junior Misha Kvantaliani was victorious at the No. 1 spot, battling off a comeback attempt by TAMUCC's Matthieu Peres for a 6-2, 7-6 win. Senior Carlo Izurieta endured a long, back-and-forth fight against TAMUCC No. 2 Ryuya Ata and earned a 7-6, 7-5 win. 
 
Next up, UTRGV will host Incarnate Word on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.
