STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team got their weekend started with a commanding 7-0 victory over the UT-Permian Basin (UTPB) Falcons on Friday at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts at Tarleton.
 
UTRGV (4-2) only dropped one set in the match. The Vaqueros swept the doubles courts to take the 1-0 lead, only losing one game in the process despite using some new combinations. 
 
Junior Harlingen South alum Valeria Montero padded the lead with her second win of the season at No. 6. Freshman Barbara Martinez and senior Ana Platisa followed suit at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, to clinch the match. 
 
Freshman Marjorie Souza played her first No. 1 match of the season and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Sophomore Stefanie Wilske had a fight at No. 5. She won the first set, then dropped the second in a tiebreaker. Wilske stayed mentally tough and secured the sweep with a 10-8 win in the third-set tiebreaker.  
 
UTRGV head coach West Nott used the depth of his roster to give a lot of student-athletes opportunities in the match. Eight Vaqueros contributed to the victory.
 
UTRGV's next match is Saturday at 10 a.m. against Montana State at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts.
