STEPHENVILLE – It was a fight from start to finish, but The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over the Montana State Bobcats on Saturday at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts at Tarleton.
UTRGV (5-2) jumped on top 1-0 with competitive wins on all three doubles courts. Montana State (4-8) evened things up with a singles win in the No. 2 match.
The fantastic freshmen
Marjorie Souza and
Barbara Martinez gave the lead right back to the Vaqueros. Souza won her No. 3 match 6-2, 6-3, then Martinez followed suit at No. 4 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory to make it 3-1.
The Bobcats picked up a point at No. 5 to make it 3-2 in favor of UTRGV.
Sophomore
Isabelle Bahr, who has been battling injury this season, clinched the match for UTRGV with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win at No. 1.
Senior
Sandra Putz endured another lengthy brawl in the No. 6 spot. She fought back after an opening set loss to take the second 6-4. With the overall match winner yet to be determined, Putz played a full third set against Montana State's JJ Chen that went to a tiebreaker. Putz came out with the 7-6 (7-3) win.
UTRGV's next match is Sunday at 10 a.m. against Tarleton at the Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts.
