Indoor Track & Field Rewrites Record Books on Final Day of WAC Championships

ALBUQUERQUE – Sophomore Miguel Escamilla earned bronze in the men's 800-meter run to headline the performances for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's and women's track & field teams during the final day of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The men's team finished eighth with 21 points. The women's team took ninth with 24 points.

Escamilla's time of 1:54.38 is the tenth best in program history. It's one of seven entries into the record books from Saturday.

Graduate student Aviana Goode placed fifth in the women's high jump and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles. Her high jump mark of 1.69 meters, which she cleared on her first attempt, is the second best in program history. Goode's hurdles time of 8.81 also entered the record books, and she now owns the six fastest times in UTRGV history.

Three freshmen on the men's team, competing in their first WAC Indoor Championships, entered the record books. Jermarrion Stewart was fifth in the men's 60-meter dash, finishing in 6.86, the third best in history. Mission Veterans Memorial alum Alex Galvan finished 11th in the heptathlon with 4,729 points, which is a new program record. PSJA High alum Marco Guajardo took eighth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.26 meters – a personal best and the fifth longest in program history.

Escamilla, Stewart, redshirt sophomore Yashawn Hamilton and freshman Brownsville Porter alum Jorge Salazar combined to run an impressive race in the men's 4x400-meter relay. They ran the program's eighth best time, finishing eighth in 3:18.46.

Freshman Miranda Tcheutchoua tossed a personal best 16.45 meters in the women's weight throw to lead UTRGV with a sixth-place finish. Redshirt junior Alexandrea Hurst also placed in the top 10, finishing behind her teammate in seventh.
