KINGSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros finished third in both the men's and women's team standings at Texas A&M-Kingsville's Cactus Cup on Friday at Javelina Stadium.
UTRGV's men's team totaled 102 points while the women's team tallied 73 points. Angelo State and the hosting TAMUK Javelinas finished first and second in both the men's and women's team standings. The Vaqueros set eight personal records throughout the meet.
The men's team performance was headlined by the distance runners and throwers.
The 800-meter run crew swept the podium, with graduate student La Joya High alum
Ricardo Mendoza winning gold in 1:53.64. He was followed by sophomore
Miguel Escamilla in second and
junior Edinburg North alum
Tristan Pena in third. Junior Harlingen High alum
Edward Ramos earned a gold medal in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 10:34.99.

Julian Trevino was third in the men's javelin, recording a new PR and the third best mark in program history. Sophomore
Michael Campbell claimed second in the men's discus, tying his own ninth-best mark in program history, while also taking third in shot put. Redshirt senior
Christian Hall-Gardner finished third in the men's hammer throw, fourth in discus and fifth in shot put.
UTRGV's hurdlers turned in solid performances, too. Sophomore
Uxia Pereira finished third and second in the women's 100- and 400-meter hurdles, respectively, while junior Harlingen High alum
Jasmyn Tulloch took sixth and third in the events. Both Vaqueros set personal records in the 100 hurdles.
The men's sprinters were strong, led by sophomore
Jermarrion Stewart placing third and second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Redshirt freshman
Jaleel Scott hit a personal best 10.88 to finish sixth in the 100. Sophomore
Ackeem Gordon set PRs in the 100 and 200 and earned top-10 finishes in both.

Estrella Medellin both claimed second place finishes in the women's 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively.
UTRGV's next meet is Texas A&M's Alumni Muster on April 30.
