BEAUMONT –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Grand Canyon (GCU) Antelopes on Friday in a 4-2 loss at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament.
UTRGV (6-17) locked up a 1-0 lead with a massive effort in doubles. The Vaqueros brought tons of energy from the start and took control quickly.
Juniors
Misha Kvantaliani and
George Hutchings cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first flight. Junior
Chris Lawranceand freshman
Sam Whitehead picked up a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to clinch the point, attacking the net to win exciting points. Seniors
Carlo Izurieta and
Alberto Mello held a 5-2 lead on court two when the match went unfinished.
Kvantaliani won the first set of his No. 1 singles match 6-1, but GCU (6-14) took the opening sets in the other five singles flights.
The Vaqueros battled and continued to cheer each other on from distant courts, but the Lopes secured the victory with singles wins in the fifth, third, fourth and sixth flights.
Kvantaliani snuck in a win at No. 1 just before the match was secured with 6-4 second set. Izurieta dropped the first set at No. 2, 4-6, but was leading in the second 3-2 when it went unfinished.
