SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field team had a solid outing to open the UIW Invitational on Friday, led by the distance runners who combined to win two events and set 10 personal records. 
 
The UTRGV men's 5,000-meter runners ended the day on a high note as all four student-athletes – sophomores Alex Munoz, Ricardo Garcia, Edcouch-Elsa alum Dominik Medrano and junior Harlingen High alum Edward Ramos – notched a personal record in the race. Munoz claimed the gold medal in a time of 14:47.33 to finish over 15 seconds faster than anyone else. Garcia took eighth, followed by Medrano in 13^th and Ramos in 21^st.
 
Junior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena also won gold to lead an impressive contingent of UTRGV men's 1,500-meter runners. Pena ran a personal best 3:52.13. Graduate student La Joya High alum Ricardo Mendoza was 19^th, and freshman Rio Grande City alum Alex Canales (24^th) and sophomore Miguel Escamilla (30^th) both ran PRs. 
 
Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez ran another solid race to finish second in a personal best time of 17:45.76 in the women's 5,000-meter run. Junior Anahi Romo was fifth and sophomore McAllen Rowe alum Janie Delgado finished 11^th with a PR in the event. In the women's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Sharyland High alums Ana Hernandez and Andrea Gallardo were 20^th and 22^nd, respectively, while Gallardo hit a PR. 
 
Sophomore Michael Campbell won the men's shot put in dominating fashion with a throw of 17.05 meters – which is a personal record and the sixth best mark in program history – to beat the next best finisher by over five feet. Redshirt senior Christian Hall-Gardner took gold in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 54.59 meters and was fourth in shot put. 
 
All three of UTRGV's women's 400-meter hurdles finished in the top 10. Junior Harlingen High alum Jasmyn Tulloch led the way by taking silver. Sophomore Mission Veterans alum Alex Galvan set a PR in his fifth-place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles race. 
 
The Vaqueros won a total of four events and hit 12 personal bests on Friday. The UIW Invitational continues Saturday with field events starting at 9:30 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
