SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros kicked off competition at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Husky Track in Seattle. 
 
Redshirt senior Christian Hall-Gardner claimed sixth place in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 52.75 meters. His first throw was the one to put him on the podium and score for the Vaqueros. 
 
With two events scored, the UTRGV men's team is tied for seventh place in the team standings with three points. The UTRGV women have not scored through three events.  
 
Sophomore Mission Veterans alum Alex Galvan got off to a good start in the men's decathlon. He's currently in sixth place with 3,298 points through five events. Galvan notched a new personal best to win the decathlon shot put with a throw of 13.44 meters, clinching the top mark on his final throw. The final five events of the decathlon will be completed tomorrow. 
 
Sophomore McAllen Rowe alum Janie Delgado hit a personal record to lead UTRGV's trio of women's 1,500-meter runners. Delgado finished in 5:05.99 to place 23^rd in prelims. Junior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena was 17^th in the men's 1,500-meter run prelims. The top 12 finishers advanced to finals in each race. 
 
In the men's and women's 200-meter dash prelims, sophomore Jermarrion Stewart (24^th) and junior Elizabeth Ortiz (36^th) were UTRGV's top finishers. Junior Harlingen High alum Jasmyn Tulloch led the women's 400-meter hurdlers with a 12^th place finish in prelims. The top eight finishers advanced to finals in those events. 
 
Sophomore Lyford alum Kayleen May made her conference championships debut and finished 17^th in the women's javelin. 
 
The WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will continue Friday with the decathlon getting the action started at 11:30 a.m. The Vaqueros will try to make the finals in seven running events and will run the final of the men's and women's steeplechase.
