Campbell, Galvan Score for Outdoor Track & Field During Day Two of WAC Championships

SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros competed well during Day Two of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Husky Track in Seattle on Friday.  
 
Sophomore Michael Campbell placed sixth in the men's shot put to score for the Vaqueros. He was followed by redshirt senior Christian Hall-Gardner in 10th
 
Sophomore Mission Veterans alum Alex Galvan contributed to the team score with an eighth-place finish in the men's decathlon. He accumulated 5,666 points – the sixth-most in program history and his third entry into the top 10. Galvan had a strong showing in the final five events completed Friday, taking second in discus and setting new personal records in the javelin (fifth), 1,500-meter run (eighth) and 110-meter hurdles (ninth). 
 
Through six scored events, the men's team is in ninth place. The women's team has yet to score through eight completed events. 
 
Graduate student La Joya High alum Ricardo Mendoza won his heat in 1:53.08 to automatically clinch a spot in the men's 800-meter run, taking control from the gun and maintaining the lead all the way through. Sophomore Miguel Escamilla finished 10th in 1:53.05, a new personal record. Sophomore Brownsville Porter alum Estrella Medellin also set a new PR in the women's 800-meter run to finish 11th
 
Both of UTRGV's steeplechasers set new personal records at the conference meet. Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez placed 10th in the women's race, finishing in 10:55.92 to best her own fourth-fastest time in program history. Sophomore Ricardo Garcia was 15th in the men's race.  
 
Sophomore Jermarrion Stewart slimly missed the finals in the men's 100-meter dash, finishing ninth and .02 seconds behind the final qualifier. Sophomore Uxia Pereira was the top women's 100-meter hurdle finisher, taking 12th place. Sophomore Brownsville Porter alum Jorge Salazar was 15th in the men's 400-meter dash and junior Elizabeth Ortiz was 22nd in the women's 400-meter dash. The top eight finishers advanced to finals in those events. 
 
The WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will finish Saturday.
