RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team held tough but dropped a 1-0 decision to the Kansas State Wildcats on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (0-3-0) freshman goalkeeper
Emilie Schroeder was solid in goal, recording six saves. Kansas State (1-1-1) got just enough to capture a victory as
Kyler Goins found the only goal of the contest in the second half.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie, which spoke to the strength of UTRGV's defensive effort. Kansas State was running wild early in the first half and creating a plethora of chances. The Wildcats outshot the Vaqueros 8-1, and 2-1 shots on goal, but Schroeder and Co. were up to the task.
Schroeder made two nice saves, and the Vaqueros defense in front of her did well to keep Kansas State at bay. Sophomore defenders

Elina Seppälä, and freshman midfielder
Alaina Granger aided the defensive effort.
UTRGV's offense came alive late in the opening half. Senior forward
Jeweleen Reuille made her presence known, pressing offensively and putting a shot on goal that was saved. Freshman forward
Caitlin Webster and sophomore forward
Amy Hislop and junior midfielder Brownsville Pace alum
Marcy Garza helped the improved offensive play.
The second half started similarly, with the Wildcats maintaining ball control and playing aggressive on offense. In the 51
st minute, Kansas State struck first with a goal by
Kyler Goins to take the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros continued to play tough on defense after the score with Granger, Beilfuss and freshman defender
Rosey Bjorgvinsdottir contributing. Offensively, Hislop and Reuille challenged Kansas State and kept UTRGV competitive.
UTRGV played well and left it all on the pitch, but it came up just short against the first of its Big 12 opponents. The Vaqueros will face No. 7 TCU at 1 p.m. Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
