RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team dropped its Sunday match against the No. 7 Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs 5-0 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
It was the first match against a ranked opponent UTRGV (0-4-0) has hosted and the fifth time the Vaqueros have faced a ranked opponent. Freshman goalkeeper
Emilie Schroeder made two saves and freshman keeper
Emma Lööv made three. TCU (3-0-1) was led offensively by
Messiah Bright, who recorded a hat trick.
AJ Hennessey and
Michelle Slater added goals while
Seven Castain tallied two assists and keeper
Azul Alvarez saved all three shots on goal.
TCU came out in attack mode and notched the first goal of the match in the second minute off Bright's foot after taking advantage of a corner kick. The Horned Frogs dominated possession and were aggressive in their offensive third, showcasing their speed and outshooting the Vaqueros 23-4, including 10-3 with shots-on-goal. They also got eight corner kicks to UTRGV's one.
Schroeder got the start in net and Lööv took over in the second half. UTRGV's keepers were helped by a tenacious defensive effort. Freshman defender

Molly Reynosa hustled to get UTRGV's offense some chances. Midway through the opening half, Hislop took a shot following a throw-in in the Vaqueros' offensive third, but Alvarez notched the save.
The Horned Frogs made it 2-0 in the 41
st minute following back-to-back corner kicks.
Lauren Memoly received the corner and sent it in, then Hennessey controlled it and sunk a turning kick. TCU kept the momentum rolling in the second half and quickly went up 4-0 following back-to-back goals by Bright to record a hat trick. Bright scored in the 52
nd and 55
th minutes, once with her dribbling skills and then after going up and sending a header to the net off a perfect corner kick by Castain.
Despite the deficit, the Vaqueros continued to play hard led by the feisty Recarte-Pacheco. Hislop, Recarte-Pacheco and sophomore freshman
Anna Frida Groedem took shots in the second half, but Alvarez came up with the saves. UTRGV's commendable defensive effort was a true full team effort.
The Horned Frogs extended their lead to 5-0 in the 81
st minute when Slater took advantage of a free kick.
UTRGV will cap its five-game homestand with a Senior Night match against Texas Southern on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
