SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team had a busy day of competition to open the Roadrunner Invitational at the UTSA Tennis Center on Friday. 
 
The tournament continues Saturday. UTRGV gets underway with doubles action at 9:30 a.m. and singles play at 11:30 a.m. 
 
UTRGV newcomers junior Emilien Burnel and freshman McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar captured the first victories of their Vaqueros careers. 
 
Burnel picked up a great 6-1, 6-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Tomas Quesada Perez in the Singles D Draw quarterfinals. He'll play in the D East semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Salazar defeated SMU's Eli Susser 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the Singles H Draw quarterfinals and will play in the H East Semifinal at 3 p.m. 
 
Fellow Vaquero, senior Chris Lawrance, will also be in the Singles H Draw East Semifinals after beating Oral Roberts' Kevin Leuenberger 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. 
 
Burnel and sophomore Sam Whitehead went 1-1 in the C Doubles Draw, defeating Oral Roberts' Gustavo Pinho/Eli Brewer 6-2 after dropping a tight quarterfinal match 7-5 to UIW's Joao Sasso/Andoni Garmendia. Burnel/Whitehead advanced to the C Draw West Final match set for 9:30 a.m. 
 
Sophomores Borna Devald and Karlo Krolo paired up to play in the A Draw and went 0-2, falling to UTSA's Alan Magadan/Sebastian Rodriguez 6-2 and Miami's Nacho Serra Sanchez/Jackson Armistead 6-3. The Croatian duo will play TAMUCC's Matthieu Peres/Lucas Schurdevin in the A Draw South Stage Final at 9:30 a.m. 
 
In the C Doubles Draw, Salazar was paired with Our Lady of the Lake's Michael Canales. They went 0-2, falling 6-2 to UTSA's Garrett Skelly/Andrew Keene in the quarterfinals and 7-5 to ACU's Benjamin McDonald/Ethan Scribner in the C Draw West Semifinals. They'll play the C Draw South Final scheduled for 10 a.m. against Pinho/Brewer. Salazar and Canales will face off in the Singles H Draw East Semifinals. 
 
Seniors Te Kani Williams and Lawrance played in the D Doubles Draw and dropped their quarterfinal match 6-1 to SMU's Alex Stafford/Eli Susser. After receiving a bye in Friday's semifinal round, Williams/Lawrance will play in the D Draw West Final at 9:30 a.m. against ORU's Aaron Brewer/Kevin Leuenberger. 
 
In singles action, Devald lost his A Draw quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-3 to Alan Magadan (UTSA). He'll face Jack Winkler in the A Draw West semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Krolo dropped his E Draw quarterfinal match to UTA's Solano Caffarena 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and will play UIW's Rafal Bednarczuk in the West Semifinals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Williams lost 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 to UTSA's Andrew Keene and Whitehead was defeated 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 by Noah Wheen, both in the Singles G Draw quarterfinals.
