PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team fell 5-0 to the Grand Canyon University (GCU) Lopes on Thursday at GCU Stadium.
The Lopes (9-4-3, 3-1-2 WAC) came out from the get-go and put pressure on the Vaqueros (3-9-3, 1-5-1 WAC).
In 12
th minute, Aleisha Ganief got the scoring started as she took the pass from Bekah Valdez and then found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Gianna Gourley extended GCU's lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the 21
st and 23
rd minutes as Leah Pirro got an assist on the first goal while Valdez got the assist for the second.
The Vaqueros buckled down the rest of the first half as the four shots from the Lopes were either blocked or saved to keep the score the same heading into the half.
GCU added two more goals in the second half to put a cap on the scoring.
Freshman
Emilia Compian finished the night with a career-high 10 saves.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they close out the road trip at California Baptist at 8 p.m. at CBU Soccer Stadium.
