PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team hung tough with the Grand Canyon University Lopes but fell 4-1 on Sunday at GCU Stadium.
The Vaqueros (4-7, 1-3 WAC) controlled possession most of the first half as they put pressure on the Lopes (6-4-2, 1-1-1 WAC). UTRGV had several opportunities in front of the GCU goal but couldn't put them away as GCU goalkeeper Leon Schmidt made a couple of saves.
GCU made their opportunities count as Samuel Lossou scored a goal in the ninth minute for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Vaqueros continued to control the possession, but the back line of the Lopes combined to deny the opportunities. GCU quickly countered on a free kick and added another goal in the 54
th minute as Clayton Duarte got one passed UTRGV goalkeeper
Alexis Gonzalez making it 2-0.
GCU added another goal in the 60
th minute as Bright Nutornutsi was able to sneak one into the goal on multiple looks in front of the goal and then added another goal in the 81
st minute as Parker Gamboa scored to make it 4-0.
UTRGV got their goal in the 82
nd minute as a foul in the box gave the Vaqueros a penalty kick. Graduate student
Bryant Farkarlun converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season putting a cap on the scoring.
The Vaqueros competed with the Lopes as they were outshot 14 to 11 and 7 to 4 on goal.
Gonzalez finished the night with three saves.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 12, when they host No. 17 Seattle U at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
