RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that the men's and women's golf teams raised nearly $40,000 to support Vaqueros student-athletes during the UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, on Monday at Champion Lakes Golf Course, the future home of the Vaqueros Golf Center.
 
The golf classic featured 100 participants on 25 teams taking part in a 4-person scramble. The winning team was L&F Distributors, led by McLean Beckwith, Ethan Galvan, Raul Gonzalez, and Rickie Sanchez, with a score of 56, 16-under par. For their efforts, the L&F Distributors team won a trip to a Dallas Cowboys game, courtesy of RGV Tours. 
 
Three teams finished with a 57, 15-under par, including Dr. Melissa Uriegas and family, Johnstone Supply, and the Sutherland family. Dr. Uriegas is a women's golf alum, having competed for the program from 2007-11.
 
Dr. Uriegas and family won the use of a suite at a Vaqueros baseball game, donated by South Texas Commercial.
 
Johnstone Supply won four hours of golf at Killers Golf.
 
"We want to express our appreciation for the incredible generosity and dedication of our supporters," UTRGV head men's golf coach Houston Moore said. "We hope everyone had a memorable time at the golf classic and enjoyed the opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for both golf and UTRGV. The support and encouragement of our participants, sponsors, and the entire community mean the world to us, and we want everyone to know how much we appreciate their involvement."
 
The UTRGV Golf Classic, presented by D. Wilson Construction, included breakfast from Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q, lunch courtesy of G3 Scrap Metal, hospitality courtesy of 5x5 Brewing Co., L&F Distributors, and Casa De Palmas, tee gifts, courtesy of PBK Sports prizes, and $400 from Wing Barn for the closest to the pin and longest drive competitions.
 
Participants also had the opportunity to interact with special guest Genaro Davila, Miura Golf's master fitter who originally fit Abraham Ancer for Miura clubs in 2017. Ancer, who was born in McAllen, grew up in Reynosa, and went to Sharyland High School, currently sports an Official World Golf Ranking of 109.

"We are deeply appreciative of the community's support for our program and are excited to continue to represent the Valley across the country through competition this spring."
