LUBBOCK– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by the Texas Tech Raiders (TTU) on Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center. 
 
Texas Tech (4-4) claimed the doubles point and a 1-0 lead with wins on the third and second doubles courts, 6-2 and 6-4, respectively. In the No. 1 match, UTRGV (3-6) duo of junior Emilien Burnel and sophomore Karlo Krolo held a 5-4 lead over the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) No. 26 ranked doubles team of Dimitrios Azoidis/Reed Collier, but the bout went unfinished once the point was secured. 
 
TTU secured the match victory with singles wins on the first, third and sixth courts by Olle Wallin, Isaac Arevalo and Lorenzo Esquici, respectively. The Red Raiders extended their lead to 5-0 with a win at No. 2. 
 
Sophomore Sam Whitehead gave Azoidis a good fight in the second set of their No. 4 match. After dropping the first 6-1, Whitehead responded well in a back-and-forth second frame, but Azoidis held on to take the competitive set 7-6 (7-1). 
 
Senior Chris Lawrance gave Tyler Stewart all he could handle in the No. 5 match. Lawrance challenged Stewart in the first set but fell 6-3, then bounced back to control the second set and win it 6-4. With the team victory secured, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner. Lawrance was competitive, but Stewart secured the sweep by taking the frame 10-5. 
 
UTRGV's next match will be back home at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 11 a.m. against Incarnate Word on Friday.
