GEORGETOWN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team cruised to their first win of the season 8-1 over the Southwestern Pirates on Friday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.    
 
UTRGV (1-3) took a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. Sophomore Daniela Rosenberger and freshman Yaiza Vazquez got the Vaqueros started with an 8-2 lead at No. 3, then junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez won 8-1 at No. 2. The No. 1 match was a tighter affair, but the UTRGV duo of junior Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Marjorie Souza earned a good 8-6 win to get the match started on a high note. 
 
The Vaqueros carried that momentum into singles action and clinched the match victory with straight-set wins by Bahr at No. 3 and Vazquez at No. 5. Bahr dropped just one game as she swiftly handled Emma Kesterson 6-1, 6-0. 
 
Martinez and Souza extended UTRGV's lead to 7-0 with solid wins in the fourth and second flights, respectively. Southwestern got on the board with a hard win at No. 1 by Nina Mitrofanova. Freshman Valentina Urraco battled in a lengthy match with Alli Ziehm at No. 6 and captured a come-from-behind win in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). 
 
The Vaqueros will play at Texas State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
