SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team defeated the Texas State Bobcats 5-2 on Saturday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex, marking the first victory for the Vaqueros between the two programs since 2008. 
 
UTRGV (2-3) came out firing on all cylinders and swept the doubles competition to take the 1-0 lead. Junior Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Marjorie Souza captured a 6-2 win at No. 1, junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez won 6-2 at No. 2, and the No. 3 duo of sophomore Daniela Rosenberger and Yaiza Vazquez walked away with a 6-3 victory. 
 
Karren dominated her No. 1 match en route to a 6-2, 6-2 win. Texas State (1-5) got on the board with a win at No. 4 by Andrea Pineda, but Bahr's 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 put the Vaqueros in control up 3-1. The Bobcats closed the gap to 3-2 with a win at No. 5 by Mae McCutcheon. 
 
Then, Rosenberger secured UTRGV's second consecutive win with a big come-from-behind victory, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 flight.  
 
Souza capped UTRGV's solid performance with a resilient win at No. 2 over Emily Niers. After dropping a competitive first set 6-7 (3), Souza bounced back to take the second 6-4. The third frame was played in full since it started with the team victory still up for grabs. Niers opened up a 5-2 lead, but Souza battled and closed the bout on a 5-0 run to win 7-5. 
 
The Vaqueros will play their first home match of the season Friday against Prairie View A&M at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 9 a.m. UTRGV's men's tennis team will play PVAMU after the women's match.
