HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team is back in action when it competes at the 2023 Bayou City Collegiate Classic, hosted by Houston, Rice, and Sam Houston, starting on Monday at Westwood Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday with play starting at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Westwood Golf Club plays 7,184 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
There will be a 16-team field that will feature UTRGV, Rice, Houston, Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Oral Roberts, Southern Illinois, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, UT Arlington, and UTSA.

The Vaqueros opened the spring season at the Border Olympics where they finished in 16
th place with rounds of 314, 293, and 308.
Javier Neira Garcia led the way with a three-round score of 222 as he finished tied for 24
th. Garcia posted rounds of 77, 71, and 74.
Leonardo Novella finished tied for 62
nd with a three-round score of 230 after carding rounds of 80, 73, and 77.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque tied for 73
rd with a three-round score of 234 with rounds of 79, 76, and 79.
Carlos Roldos finished tied for 77
th with a three-round score of 236 after posting rounds of 80, 73, and 83.
Taj Sutherland finished tied for 81
st with a three-round score of 237 with rounds of 78, 81, and 78.
Last Year at Bayou City Classic
The Vaqueros finished in 16
th place in last year's Bayou City Collegiate Classic with a three-round score of 940 after posting rounds of 322, 314, and 304.
Leonardo Novella led the Vaqueros with a three-round score of 234 as he finished tied for 58
th after posting rounds of 80, 77, and 77.
Taj Sutherland finished tied for 70
th with a three-round score of 238 with rounds of 80, 82, and 76.
Sebastian Lundberg finished tied for 83
rd with a three-round score of 244 after turning in rounds of 83, 84, and 77.
Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi finished tied for 87
th with a three-round score of 246 with rounds of 79, 80, and 87 and
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished in 94
th with a three-round score of 149 after posting rounds of 75 and 74.
Florida Atlantic won the team title with a three-round score of 876 with rounds of 303, 284, and 289. Florida Atlantic's Alex Maguire and New Mexico State's Garrison Smith tied for the individual lead with three-round scores of 213. Maguire won the playoff to take home the trophy.
