RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team earned its third win in a row with a 5-2 victory over the Prairie View A&M (PVAMU) Panthers on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. 
 
UTRGV (3-3) swept the doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 2 duo of junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez cruised to a 6-0 win, then the No. 3 pair of sophomore Daniela Rosenberger and freshman Yaiza Vazquez followed suit with a quick 6-0 win to clinch the point. 
 
In the No. 1 doubles flight, junior Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Marjorie Souza came roaring back from a 0-2 deficit to secure the sweep with a 6-2 win. 
 
The Vaqueros clinched the match with wins on the sixth, fifth and first singles courts. Senior Stefanie Wilske was dominant on the sixth court, quickly earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Freshman Valentina Urraco earned her first win of the season with a solid 6-3, 6-2 performance at No. 5. Bahr clinched the team victory with a hard-fought 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1. 
 
PVAMU got on the board with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) win by Ruju Chauhan at No. 3. Senior Kristyna Mamicova battled for a good 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 4. 
 
Vazquez fought in a grueling No. 2 match against Aleyla Wooten. The freshman won the first set 6-4, then Wooten took the second 7-6 (7-5). With the team win clinched, the third set was a 10-point tiebreaker. Vazquez opened up a 6-1 lead but Wooten came back to take the tiebreaker, 10-8, and get the win.  
 
The Vaqueros will play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Community Credit Union on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
