RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the Tarleton Texans 6-2 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,887 to clinch a victory in the weekend series, having taken the first two games.
Graduate student
Brandon Pimentel led the Vaqueros (14-12, 5-6 WAC) offensively by going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
Grant Garza (2-2) retired the first six batters he faced. In the third, however, the Vaqueros put runners at second and third with one out. A wild pitch brought home senior Vela alum
RJ Ochoa. Then, with runners on the corners again, sophomore Vela alum
Isaac Lopez laid down a safety squeeze to bring home junior
Kade York. Pimentel followed with an RBI-double and senior
Roberto Gonzalez capped the inning with a two-run home run, his third of the season and second in as many games, to make the score 5-0. Gonzalez's home run had an exit velocity of 104 miles per hour, traveling an estimated 380 feet.
Junior
Angelo Cabral (5-0) made the runs stand up, striking out six in 6.0 innings while allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. Four of the hits came when the Texans (14-10, 1-5 WAC) scored their runs in the fifth on a
Mason Crews sacrifice fly and a
Mason Hammons RBI-single.
The Vaqueros got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Pimentel launched a no-doubt home run over the left-center field wall. The ball left Pimentel's bat at 108.7 miles per hour and traveled an estimated 382 feet.
Graduate student
Jesus Aldaz pitched 3.0 hitless innings of relief, striking out six, for his first save.
Cabral and Aldaz combined for 12 strikeouts compared to two walks.
