DENTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell to the University of North Texas (UNT) Mean Green 1-6 on Sunday at Waranch Tennis Complex.
With her team down 0-3, sophomore
Barbara Martinez put the Vaqueros (10-8) on the board by coming back from a 1-6 first set loss to win set two 6-4 and set three 6-1 over
Olivia Malm on court four.
The remaining three courts were all tight, with two going to third set tiebreakers and one going to a second set tiebreak. On court six, freshman
Yaiza Vazquez battled back from a 5-7 first set loss to tie the second set at 6-6 before dropping the tiebreaker 1-7 and the set 6-7 to
Marina Adati.
Senior
Stefanie Wilske won her first set on court five 6-3. After
Nformi Stadfany took the second set 6-2, Wilske and Stadfany engaged in a tight third set that ended in an epic tiebreak. Wilske and Stadfany split the first eight points. Then, after Stadfany scored the next two, Wilske came back to tie the score at 6 before Stadfany won the final two points to clinch the victory.
Junior
Isabelle Bahr was strong on court three. After dropping the first set 3-6, she came back for a 6-2 win. Bahr and
Kexuan Zhou went to a third set tiebreaker, with Zhou winning 7-5 to take the set 7-6.
Wilske and sophomore
Daniela Rosenberger nearly pulled out a doubles win on court three, forcing a tiebreaker before falling 6-7 (6-8) to Zhou and
Olivia Halvorsen. The Mean Green (10-9) won the other two doubles matches 7-5.
UTRGV returns home for its final two regular season matches, both of which are Western Athletic Conference matches, Friday at 11 a.m. against Stephen F. Austin and Sunday at 9 a.m. against Sam Houston at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center. Admission is complimentary. Select courts will be broadcast live on
