RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's (UTRGV) junior
Emilien Burnel and sophomore
Borna Devald were selected to the 2023 WAC Men's Tennis All-Tournament Doubles Team by the conference's head coaches.
Burnel and Devald went 2-0 in the No. 1 doubles flight to help the #5 Vaqueros advance to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament last week. In the opening round match against #4 Seattle U, Burnel/Devald dominated their court to take a 6-3 win over
Clement Hamel/Veselin Kiselkov. In the semifinal match against #1 UT Arlington (UTA), Burnel and Devald were locked in a battle against UTA's top duo of
Anton Shepp and
Solano Caffarena. Burnel/Devald showed off their quick hands and athleticism to control the net and outlast the Mavericks in an exciting match, 7-5.
With the strong outing at the conference tournament, Burnel and Devald improved their overall season record as a doubles team to 14-5. They went 13-4 throughout the spring season and finished 5-2 against WAC opponents. The duo finished the year with an impressive 10-4 record in the No. 1 flight.
Burnel and Devald were named to the All-WAC Doubles Second Team after going 3-2 during the conference season. They won two TicketSmarter WAC Men's Tennis Doubles Players of the Week awards in the spring season.
