RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday the promotion of Leo Cantu to accountant II after serving as an intern during the 2022-23 academic year.
As an intern, Cantu developed automated financial reports and balanced and reconciled cost and revenue accounts for UTRGV athletics. Cantu also assisted in the creation of processes to identify and reconcile costs associated with travel and operations and prepared and presented departmental budgets, analyses, and reports. Cantu is expected to earn his Master of Business Administration in Data Analytics at UTRGV in May 2024.
"As a student employee, Juan worked on several special projects that assisted with the financial management of the department," UTRGV senior associate athletic director for business operations James Martinez said. "Juan exhibited the skills and personality that made him ideal for this position. We are excited to see Juan grow with our department as he will play an important role in our financial operations."
Prior to his time at UTRGV, Cantu worked as a senior transfer pricing consultant for Deloitte in Monterrey, Mexico. In that role, Cantu balanced and analyzed accounting information to ensure compliance with tax obligations, coordinated and assisted teams with international clients to comply with fiscal obligations, prepared and presented reports from the analyses of financial information of businesses, and provided the valuation of tangible and intangible assets.
"Being part of the athletics department as an intern for almost a year has helped me to develop and advance my career, as has being motivated by our exceptional leaders.," Cantu said. "I am committed to sharmy knowledge and experience to help the department and grow my role. I am also thankful for my supervisors, mentors and colleagues for trusting and giving me this opportunity."
Cantu spent time as a finance professor at Instituto Universitario Benito Juarez in Monterrey in 2021. He created lesson plans for financial valuation and financial topics, and taught courses with a focus on basic and advanced excel skills development.
Cantu also worked as a lead mentor for UTRGV from 2016-17. He assisted and guided student mentors, hosted monthly meetings with student mentors, and prepared and developed plans for academic and personal success of mentors and mentees.
Cantu earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics and Finance at UTRGV in May 2017.
