UTRGV Athletics Becomes First DI Program to Introduce Branded Electrolytes in Over 60 Years

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday a partnership with Alpha Supps to introduce Vaqueros Lytes, making UTRGV the first NCAA Division I program to introduce branded electrolytes since 1965.

Vaqueros Lytes is an electrolyte powder that can be mixed with water that creates a refreshing citrus flavor inspired by the Valley's oranges and grapefruit. It uses vitamin C and 60 mg of magnesium for recovery. Vaqueros Lytes also contains 1,000 mg of sodium and 200 mg of potassium to help replenish what the body loses in the heat, allowing for hydration, recovery, and continued performance.

"As we expand our local partnerships in the consumables category, we are thrilled to be able to work with Alpha Supps and enter a unique category by giving people the opportunity to hydrate with Vaqueros Lytes," UTRGV Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. "We are excited for the Valley and UTRGV to feature the only college athletics branded electrolytes powder on the market. This is a creative partnership that promotes wellness, the Vaqueros, and Valley pride."

Preorders open Aug. 17 exclusively at AlphaSupps.com.

"At Alpha Supps, our mission has always been simple: to inspire people to become the best version of themselves. That's why we're committed to creating products that truly perform while building partnerships that make a lasting impact," Alpha Supps Founder & CEO Alex Sims said. "This is our biggest collaboration to date, and we couldn't imagine a better partner than UTRGV. Together, we're proud to bring Vaqueros Lytes to the people of the Rio Grande Valley and celebrate the community that inspires everything we do."

This is UTRGV Athletics' fifth branded consumable product, along with Los Vaqueros, a blood orange kölsch style ale produced by 5x5 Brewing Co., Vaqueros Especial, a medium roasted jalapeño and chile piquin taco-style salsa produced by Tio Pelon's Salsita, Vaqueros Gourmet BBQ Sauce, a smoked serrano gourmet barbecue sauce produced by The Jank, and Vaqueros Roast, a UTRGV-branded coffee with an aroma containing notes of nutmeg and jasmine that features a distinct flavor with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and nuttiness made by Reserva Coffee Roasters.

Other universities to introduce branded electrolytes, which came in the form of sports drinks, include LSU (Bengal Punch, 1958), Florida State (Seminole Firewater, 1962), Nebraska (Huskerade, 1964), Florida (Gatorade, 1965), and Rutgers (Sportade, 1965).
