RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team battled with the Tarleton State Texans but fell 1-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (3-5-2, 1-1-0 WAC) and the Texans (4-5-3, 1-0-1 WAC) made defense the focal point of the first half. Both teams combined for just one shot in the first half, and it was UTRGV's goalkeeper freshman
Anais van Doesburg who made the save to keep the match scoreless.
Opportunities were present for both teams in the second half, but it wasn't until the 78
th minute that the Texans were able to get one on the board. After a handball that gave the Texans a free kick, it was Rylee Low, who took the free kick, and snuck it past van Doesburg for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros had some good looks at the end of the match, but Texans goalkeeper Mikayla Kendall came up big with her lone save of the match.
UTRGV got all their shots in the second half as they outshot Tarleton State 7-3 but were outshot on goal 2-1.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sept. 28 when they visit Seattle U at 9 p.m. at Championship Field.
