CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team saw three student-athletes advance to the semifinals of their respective singles draws Friday to begin the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. 
 
Junior Marjorie Souza reached the Singles Flight B semifinals after rolling in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lamar's Marika Mueller. Sophomore Yaiza Vazquez captured a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10:2) win against Natalia Aleksandra Turczuk from Lamar in Singles Flight D. In her UTRGV debut, junior Kristal Dule picked up a solid 6-2, 6-4 win in Singles Flight E over Texas A&M-Kingsville's (TAMUK) Luna Jokanovic. 
 
Souza, Vazquez and Dule will compete Saturday for a chance to reach the championship of their respective flights. Souza plays Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's (AMCC) Kateryna Rublevska at 10 a.m. Vazquez and Dule are scheduled to play at 12 p.m. against AMCC's Victoire Delattre and Texas State's Mae McCutcheon, respectively. 
 
Sophomore Valentina Urraco earned a good 6-3, 6-3 win over Utah State's Savannah Johnson in the round-robin Singles Flight X. She'll play TAMUK's Ella Hester at 1 p.m. Saturday. 
 
The doubles team of Souza and graduate student Isabelle Bahr dropped a grueling 7-6 (12:10) match to Utah State's Ana Chavez Sanchez/Lisa Kung in Flight A. 
 
All of the Vaqueros doubles teams will be playing in the West Semifinals Saturday. Doubles action kicks off the day at 9 a.m., and UTRGV's singles play begins at 10 a.m.
