Men's Basketball Falls to Tarleton State

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Tarleton State Texans 77-73 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 1,514.
 
Junior Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (6-13, 2-6 WAC) with 23 points and two steals. Junior Sherman Brashear scored 14 points while hitting four 3-pointers to go with a season-high six rebounds. Freshman C.J. Booker scored 12 points with four assists. Senior Daylen Williams scored 10 points with eight rebounds and four assists. Senior Ahren Freeman finished with nine points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
 
Lue Williams led the Texans (12-6, 5-2 WAC) with 28 points and six rebounds. KiAndre Gaddy scored 11 points with eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Jakorie Smith scored 11 points with five rebounds and two steals. Devon Barnes scored 10 points with four assists and two steals.
 
The Vaqueros hit eight of their first 11 shots to build an 18-8 lead over the first seven and a half minutes. Booker set the tone with a floater and a 3 in the opening minute and then Elliott hit four of his first six shots.
 
The Texans pulled within six, but Brashear used two 3-pointers to power an 11-2 run, putting the Vaqueros up 29-14.
 
Then, with the score 30-18, the Vaqueros went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Booker 3-pointer, to take a 20-point lead, their largest of the game.
 
The Texans scored the next eight points before a Freeman layup gave the Vaqueros a 40-26 halftime lead.
 
The Texans pulled within 13 twice in the first four minutes of the second half, but the Vaqueros pushed back, going up by 17 multiple times, including 61-44 on a Booker jumper with 9:42 remaining.
 
The Texans responded with a 26-5 run over the next seven minutes to take their first lead and go up 70-66.
 
The Vaqueros scored five of the next seven points to pull within 72-71 on a Booker layup with 31 seconds left, but the Texans went 5-for-6 from the line to close out the game.
 
UTRGV hosts California Baptist on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The first 300 current UTRGV students in attendance will receive free food. The game features the Cane's Challenge. If the Vaqueros win, all fans in the fieldhouse will receive coupons for buy one, get one free box combos at Raising Cane's on their way out.
