LAS VEGAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the UNLV Rebels on Thursday at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The first half was tightly contested as both the Vaqueros (3-6-2, 1-2-1 WAC) and the Rebels (4-6-3, 1-1-3 WAC) combined for seven shots, but it was UNLV that capitalized scoring in the 27
th minute on a goal by Nico Lopez.
The Vaqueros came out to start the second half with a sense of urgency and put UNLV goalkeeper Hugo Lemos under pressure. Freshman
Pablo Torre had two good looks in opening minutes but couldn't get it by Lemos.
UNLV took advantage of their limited shots on goal as Lopez added another goal for in the 55
th minute taking the cross pass and heading it into the net making it 2-0 UNLV. The Rebels finished the match with just three shots on goal.
UTRGV controlled the ball most of the second half as they took seven shots with three on goal finishing the night with 10 total shots with five on goal. Torre finished a match-high five shots with three on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Sunday when they visit the Utah Tech Trailblazers at 3:30 p.m.
