ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team battled the Utah Tech University Trailblazers to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Greater Zion Stadium.
The Vaqueros (3-6-3, 1-2-3 WAC) got the scoring started in the early parts of the first half. Junior
Sota Matsuo took the loose ball and connected with junior
Kimito Fritz on top of the box who took the shot and snuck it past Utah Tech's goalie Stockton Short for the 1-0 lead.
The Trailblazers (2-8-4, 1-3-2 WAC) answered less than 10 minutes later as Sami Cuevas found the ball in front of the goal and got the equalizer in the 21
st minute.
After a red card late in the first half, the Vaqueros played the rest of the match a man short but that didn't stop them from keeping the pressure on the Trailblazers in the second half. While both teams put up 10 shots in the second half it was UTRGV that outshot Utah Tech 6 to 3 on goal and also took four corners.
UTRGV goalkeeper
Fernando Carreon (2-4-2) came up huge in the second half with three saves, including one in the final five minutes.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Oct. 24 when they host San Diego State at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 6:30 p.m. Attendance is free but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at
