CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday at Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
Even with the loss, the Vaqueros (7-6-5, 3-3-4 SLC) clinch a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament, which starts Tuesday, Nov. 5 in Corpus Christi, with Houston Christian's loss and Lamar's draw on Friday.
The Islanders (9-4-2, 6-2-2 SLC) extended their lead in the showdown standings to 13 to 4 with their three points from the win.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi grabbed the quick lead in the 2
nd minute as they got a goal from Ashley Wilson that made it 1-0.
UTRGV's defense settled down the rest of the first half as the score remained the same going into halftime.
The Islanders added a goal in the 72
nd minute as Megan Guy extended their lead to 2-0.
The Vaqueros had opportunities in the second half but couldn't convert as they finished with four shots on goal, all of which came in the second half.
Both teams finished with eight shots while the Islanders outshot the Vaqueros 6 to 4 on goal.
The next showdown event will be a pair of basketball games on Jan. 11 in Corpus Christi.
