RIO GRANDE VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team's annual Orange and Gray World Series ended after a 4-0, six-inning victory, for Team Orange in Game Three Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Three pitchers for Team Orange combined for a shutout with all three pitchers allowing just one hit in the series finale. Team Orange starter, senior
Robert Bonilla, struck out two in three innings. Junior
Caden Wanless tossed two innings in relief and two-way player junior
Steven Oliva closed out the game with two strikeouts in the sixth.
Team Orange used an explosive four-run third inning after senior
Austin Stracener drew a walk, graduate student
Eric Martinez singled, then senior
Hank Warren bunted on with some help from a throwing error that scored Stracener. Junior
Thomas Williams followed with a double that scored Martinez and Warren.
The fourth run of the frame crossed home after senior
Steven Lancia drew a walk and sophomore
Evan Janner and Oliva wore a pitch to reach base and score the fourth run.
Team Gray starter, senior
Angelo Cabral, recorded a strikeout in a scoreless inning. In relief for Team Gray, graduate student
Evan Maldonado struck out one in one scoreless inning and junior
Isaiah Gonzalez tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.
With fall ball officially coming to an end, the Vaqueros are looking forward to the spring.
"It was fun to be in the stands, let the young coaches lead the teams, and watch the guys compete," UTRGV Baseball Head Coach
Derek Matlock said. "Sometimes, you want to fast forward through the break and get into the spring, but it'll be time for us to get away and be ready to crank it up."
