DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team fell 7-0 Friday to the SMU Mustangs at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
SMU (7-3) took the early 1-0 advantage with a sweep in doubles. The Mustangs clinched the match victory with straight-set wins on the fifth, third and second courts, going up 4-0.

Will Roberts was competitive in the No. 6 singles match, picking up UTRGV's (3-9) only first-set win, 6-2, over
Callaway Clark. Senior
Emilien Burnel battled at No. 1 but was edged by
Adam Neff, 7-5, in a back-and-forth opening set.
Roberts dropped the second set of his match, 6-3, and went into a 10-point tiebreaker in the third. It was a tight frame, with Roberts and Clark swapping scores to a 7-7 knot, but Clark held on late to take the win, 10:8, and improve SMU's score to 6-0.
Burnel continued to fight on the top court, exchanging blows with Neff but holding a small lead in the second set. He locked in with the set tied 6-6 to win the tiebreaker and take the frame, 7-6, sending the match to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third. It went back-and-forth early, then Neff opened up a lead and closed the match on a run to seal his victory, 1-0 (10:4).
Up next for the Vaqueros is a South Texas Showdown rematch at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's teams from both schools.
