CORPUS CHRISTI –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team dropped the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, rematch Thursday to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 7-0, at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
AMCC (8-2) claimed the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts. Senior
Emilien Burnel and freshman
Ivo Isqueiro competed well in the No. 1 match, closing the bout strong after the Islanders won on Court Two to capture a hard-fought 7-5 win and even out the doubles session.

Santiago Serrano were locked in a fight to determine the 1-0 lead. They found themselves leading, 3:1, in the tiebreaker with the match stuck at 6-6, but AMCC's team of
Lucas Schurdevin/Nicolas Trebuchet used a late run to secure the point with a 7-6 (7:3) win.
The Islanders secured the victory up 4-0 with wins on the fourth, third and second singles courts. The matches were tight across the board, with lead changes and comebacks from both squads. Freshman
Paolo Bonaguro got off to a good start to win the first set of his match, but AMCC's
Antoine Vicaire came back to win in three sets on Court Five and extend the lead to 5-0.
Burnel showed his resilience in the top singles flight, battling back after dropping a back-and-forth first set, 7-6, to handily win the second, 6-3, and head to a decisive third frame. The team captain played hard to get in control, up 4-3, but
Avery Zavala came back to get the three-set win.
The Vaqueros will be back in action this weekend, playing at Our Lady of the Lake at 4 p.m. Saturday and at #18 Baylor at 6 p.m. Sunday.
