Women’s Tennis Hosting UTEP, Incarnate Word This Weekend

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team is returning to its home courts looking to build on a hot streak.

The Vaqueros (3-1) have won three matches in a row and are riding high after picking up two tough wins. They'll aim to extend the winning streak when they face UTEP Saturday at 9 a.m. at Kiskeya Athletics and Incarnate Word Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Admission to Kiskeya will be $10 and spectators will be required to fill out a waiver, but the match Sunday is free.

UTRGV is 2-10 all-time against UTEP (1-6) and last defeated the Miners in 2008. UTEP has won the last six meetings between the programs, including the 2022 neutral match in Stephenville, 5-2. In that match, junior Marjorie Souzathen a freshman, picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 1 singles match.

The Vaqueros lead the all-time series against Incarnate Word (1-6), 6-2. UTRGV won last year's matchup against the Cardinals, 4-3, in Edinburg. The Vaqueros took the doubles point and saw senior Lea Karren clinch the victory with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 3 singles match.

UTRGV's last match was a historic 4-3 victory at Houston, marking the first time the program has beat the Big 12 team. Souza won in three at No. 1, sophomore Yaiza Vazquez clinched the victory with a three-set win at No. 4, junior Kristal Dule stayed perfect on the season with a comeback three-set win at No. 5 and sophomore Valentina Urraco captured a sound win at No. 6.

That match was the second this season in which the Vaqueros came back after dropping the doubles point. They've showed great resiliency to quickly regroup and battle well in singles, fighting off match points and grinding out lengthy bouts to get wins. The Vaqueros bring tons of energy to the courts and hope to feed off even more energy from the fans as they look to stay hot this weekend.
