RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team dropped its Sunday match 4-3 to the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UIW (2-6) forfeited the third doubles match, but the Cardinals came back to win on the second and first courts to secure the 1-0 advantage.
The score was even at 1-1 as singles began due to a UIW forfeit at singles No. 6.
Junior
Marjorie Souza rolled on the top court to put UTRGV (4-2) on top, 2-1. She was active and smart with her shots, stroking the ball well to earn a quick 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1. Sophomore
Valentina Urraco was dominant at No. 5, swiftly extending the lead to 3-1 as she controlled the court with sound play to win 6-1, 6-2.
The Cardinals picked up a straight-set win at No. 3, trimming the Vaqueros advantage to 3-2 and turning all eyes to a pair of competitive bouts on the second and fourth courts.

Lea Karren both dropped the first sets of their No. 4 and No. 2 matches, respectively, then rallied back to win the second. With the team victory hanging in the balance, both contests went to full third sets, and the tension at the Orville Cox Tennis Center was thick.
Karren leaned on her fiery demeanor to play from behind, battling with her athleticism to cover the court and knot the third set at 4-4. But UIW's
Sofia Salcedo closed the match determined and evened the overall score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win.
Vazquez jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the deciding frame of her match on Court Four. But in part due to a point penalty being applied to her match because it was administered at the conclusion of the No. 2 match, she found herself trailing, 5-4. UIW's
Iné Lamprecht took the momentum and clinched the Cardinals' victory, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Up next for the Vaqueros is Part Two of the South Texas Showdown against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The rivals will face off Thursday at 11 a.m. in Corpus with the men's teams set to battle after the match is complete.
