SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team captured a 4-3 victory Saturday over the Our Lady of the Lake (OLLU) Saints at the Blossom Tennis Center behind freshman
Santiago Serrano's clutch clinch.
UTRGV (4-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a successful doubles session. The No. 3 duo of sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Agustin Salazar and Serrano rolled to a 6-2 win, then OLLU won on Court One. With the doubles point up for grabs, freshmen
Paolo Bonaguro and
Will Roberts buckled in and controlled their No. 2 match down the stretch, getting a 6-4 win to secure the point.
The Saints evened things up with a win on the second singles court. UTRGV got back on top, 3-1, with swift wins in the first and third matches.
Senior captain
Emilien Burnel rolled in the No. 1 match, capturing a 6-2, 6-3 win. Freshman
Ivo Isqueiro was also sharp on the third court to pick up a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
OLLU again tied things up at 3-3 with straight-set wins on the sixth and fifth courts.
All eyes went to Court Four where Serrano was battling
David Daniel. Daniel won a tight first set, 7-6 (7:4), but Serrano came back strong to take the second, 6-3. With the victory hanging in the balance, Serrano went from trailing 1-3 to leading 4-3 in the decisive third. Daniel came back to tie the frame at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker.
Serrano again played from behind to knot things up at 5:5, and with things as tight as possible, he controlled the final points to secure his win, 7-6 (7:5), and UTRGV's victory.
Up next for UTRGV is a 6 p.m. match Sunday at #18 Baylor.
