WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 6-1 to the #18 Baylor Bears Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center, but freshman
Will Roberts earned his first Power Five singles win in the No. 6 match.
The Bears (12-1) went up 1-0 after wins on the third and first doubles courts. UTRGV's (4-11) freshmen duo of
Paolo Bonaguro and Roberts came out strong in the No. 2 match, taking a 2-1 lead, but their match went incomplete with the Vaqueros trailing 3-4 after Baylor claimed the doubles point. Senior captain

Ivo Isqueiro went back-and-forth with Baylor in a competitive loss at No. 1.
Baylor clinched the victory with wins on the fourth, fifth and third singles courts. The Bears extended their lead to 5-0 with a win in the top flight.
Roberts continued his solid play from doubles on the sixth singles court, quickly earning a 6-2 win in the opening frame over
Justin Braverman. The two battled in a tight second set, swapping games in an evenly contested bout that Braverman went on to win, 7-5, to force a 10-point tiebreaker in the third. Roberts opened the tiebreaker on fire, getting in control up 4-0. Braverman made a push to trim his deficit to 4-3, but Roberts wasn't fazed. He regained a four-point lead and never looked back, securing his big victory, 1-0 (10:5).
In the No. 2 match, sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Agustin Salazar showed his resiliency to come back from losing the first set, 6-3, to take the second, 6-4. Salazar held off a comeback attempt from
Martin Breysach, who made a late push trailing 3-5 in the frame, to force a 10-point tiebreaker in the third. Salazar opened up a 5:2 lead, but Breysach regained the advantage up 9:7. Salazar fought off one match point, but Breysach held on to take the 1-0 (10:8) win and extend Baylor's lead to 6-0.
UTRGV will be back in action March 3 at 10 a.m. at Prairie View A&M.
