KINGSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team is ready to take on the Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) Javelinas Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
The Vaqueros (4-3) are looking to get back in the win column after dropping their last two matches. They are 3-1 on the road this season and confident they can build on the success they've found away from home.
"Kingsville is a tough group, a really good Div. II team," UTRGV head coach
West Nott said. "It's going to take a team effort to keep building some confidence and stack up another W. We're going to have to play great doubles and hopefully take care of all the first sets out there and go from there."
UTRGV is 13-3 all-time against TAMUK (4-1) and has won the last two meetings between the squads. In 2022, the Vaqueros captured a 6-1 win in Edinburg. In their last trip to Kingsville, they earned a 4-0 sweep.
The Javelinas are coming into this match as the 24
th ranked team in NCAA Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Earlier this season, UTRGV defeated St. Mary's, ranked 13
th in Div. II, in comeback fashion.
The Vaqueros have played gritty tennis through the first month of the season and shown their resilience to come-from-behind or win in tough situations. They took a few days off to reset mentally and physically after their last match, putting them in the right state of mind to attack hard practices this week as they prepare to play two good opponents coming up.
On the court, doubles continues to be an area of focus for the Vaqueros. They've deployed a variety of doubles combinations and will continue working through things to help them get matches off to a good start.
"We did some individual meetings to get the mindset in the right spot. We had a few areas that needed some work and a lot of that just gets solved with talking," Nott said. "We've learned a lot about the individual players on the team in our first month of the season. Now it's just about getting them in the right seats on the bus. Hopefully we can make a few adjustments and keep pushing forward and getting better as a team."
