SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win Saturday over the St. Mary's Rattlers at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex for their first victory of the season.
The Vaqueros (1-1) fell behind 0-1 after St. Mary's swept the doubles session. UTRGV was competitive on all courts and again saw the doubles point come down to a tiebreaker.
UTRGV showed its resilience to come back and clinch the team victory with wins on the first, second, fourth and fifth singles courts. Junior
Marjorie Souza dominated her No. 1 match, earning a swift 6-0, 6-2 win. Senior
Lea Karren was just as solid at No. 2, capturing a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Graduate student
Isabelle Bahr made her season debut with a gritty three-set win at No. 4. After dropping the first set 2-6, she bounced back strong and cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win. Junior
Kristal Dule picked up her second singles win of the season in another three-set grinder, coming back from a tough 5-7 first-set loss to win 6-3, 7-5.
Sophomore
Yaiza Vazquez was locked in a grueling match at No. 3 and fought hard throughout, but
Paula Garrote took the tight 7-6 (14:12), 5-7, 7-6 (8:6).
UTRGV will close its first road trip of the season with a 9 a.m. match Sunday at Our Lady of the Lake.
