RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team is hosting the Texas State Bobcats Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, bringing the Bobcats to Edinburg for the first time since 2010.
UTRGV (5-3) is 4-26 all-time against Texas State (5-2) in a series dating back to 1986. When these teams faced off last season, the Vaqueros picked up a solid 5-2 win, defeating the Bobcats for the first time since 2008 and snapping a nine-match losing streak to the maroon and gold. The Vaqueros will look to beat Texas State in back-to-back matchups for the first time in the head-to-head history.
UTRGV swept doubles in the 2023 match against Texas State, then got wins on the top three courts and at No. 6. Graduate student
Isabelle Bahr, senior
Lea Karren and junior
Marjorie Souza were the top performers in that battle and will look to lead their team to victory again this season.
Souza leads the pack with a 6-2 record this spring and has primarily competed at No. 1 doubles and singles. Bahr and Karren are two of four Vaqueros, along with junior
Kristal Dule and sophomore
Yaiza Vazquez, heading into Saturday's contest with four singles wins.
The Vaqueros are coming off a good 5-2 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville, where they saw some gritty come-from-behind efforts and dominant defeats. Carrying that momentum to the Orville Cox Tennis Center and elevating their doubles play will be important factors to capture another win over the Bobcats.
