PHOENIX – Another big Western Athletic Conference (WAC) weekend is here for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team.
Up first for the Vaqueros (8-8, 0-2 WAC) will be a Thursday match at #69 Grand Canyon at 4 p.m. (CT) at the GCU Tennis Facility. The GCU Lopes (14-2, 2-0 WAC) are one of three teams to not drop a match during the first week of conference play, along with Tarleton State and Abilene Christian.
UTRGV is 4-6 all-time against Grand Canyon. The Vaqueros earned a good 4-3 win over the Lopes in last year's match, snatching the doubles point and getting tough play from the last four singles courts.
Saturday, the Vaqueros will return to the Orville Cox Tennis Center to host the UT Arlington (UTA) Mavericks. The Vaqueros and Mavericks battled in a tight 4-3 match won by UTA last spring to secure the regular season championship. Senior
Lea Karren and junior
Marjorie Souza both notched singles wins in that match, and Souza also captured a win at GCU.
The Vaqueros are 2-11 all-time against the Mavericks and will look to snap a five-match losing skid to UTA on Saturday.
Last time out, UTRGV dropped a pair of competitive matches to Tarleton State (6-1) and Abilene Christian (4-3) to start conference play. Souza has been the headliner for UTRGV on the courts, boasting an impressive 13-3 record this spring along with a 12-2 record in the No. 1 singles flight. She has won six matches in a row, including starting her WAC campaign unbeaten. Graduate student
Isabelle Bahr and sophomore
Yaiza Vazquez are 1-1 in WAC singles.
Vazquez has held down the No. 4 singles spot nicely, going 9-3 this season. Souza and Bahr are holding down the top doubles flight, holding a 2-0 mark in conference play and a 7-2 record this spring.
