PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by the #69 Grand Canyon (GCU) Lopes in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match Thursday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (15-2, 3-0 WAC) took the 1-0 lead with wins on all three doubles courts. They took control of singles early, taking the first set on all courts and swept the session to secure the victory.
Junior
Marjorie Souza was competitive in the No. 1 match against Grand Canyon's
Natasha Puehse, the No. 114 ranked singles player. After dropping the first set on the top court, 6-0, Souza went toe-to-toe with Puehse in the second, pushing the frame to extra games before Puehse took a 7-5 win.
Senior
Lea Karren battled well in the No. 3 match against
Iva Sepa, fighting for a handful of wins in both sets, but Sepa took the 6-4, 6-4 win.
UTRGV (8-9, 0-3 WAC) returns to the Orville Cox Tennis Center Saturday for a 10 a.m. conference match against UT Arlington. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
