RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Utah Tech Trailblazers 79-74 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (6-24, 2-17 WAC) with 26 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior
Sherman Brashear scored a career-high 24 points while hitting a career-high tying six 3-pointers with five rebounds, a career-high tying three assists and three steals. Senior
Daylen Williams posted his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points with 13 rebounds, two assists and four steals. Sophomore
Isaiah Barganier scored five points with a season-high tying four rebounds and a career-high tying two assists. Junior
Roy Jones III dished out a career-high five assists with a career-high tying three steals.
Beon Riley led the Trailblazers (11-19, 7-12 WAC) with 22 points with eight rebounds and three steals.
Tanner Christensen scored 19 points with nine rebounds and five assists.
Noa Gonsalvez scored 15 points.
Tennessee Rainwater scored 11 points with nine rebounds.
The Trailblazers led 7-3 when Brashear bookended a 15-0 run with layups to put the Vaqueros up 18-7. During the run, the Vaqueros hit all five of their shots while forcing six turnovers and holding the Trailblazers to just two shots.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 21-9 on a Brashear 3-pointer. The Trailblazers scored eight of the next 12 points to pull within eight before a Williams dunk and a Barganier 3-pointer put the Vaqueros up 30-17.
The Vaqueros extended their lead to a game-best 34-20 on layups by Jones and Elliott before the Trailblazers went on a 13-5 run to pull within 39-33. The Vaqueros responded with a pair of Elliot layups and a Barganier jumper to go up 45-33 in the final minute of the half.
The Trailblazers closed the first half with a basket and the opened the second half on a 9-4 run to pull within five. Brashear answered with a 3-pointer and a layup to put the Vaqueros up 54-44.
The Vaqueros went up 61-49 on a Brashear 3-pointer before the Trailblazers went on a 20-4 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes at 69-65.
The Trailblazers went up by as much as seven at 74-67 before a Brashear 3 and four Elliott free throws brought the Vaqueros to within 75-74 with 20 seconds remaining, but the Trailblazers hit four free throws down the stretch to seal their win.
UTRGV closes out the season against Southern Utah on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse for senior night. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the graduating seniors are honored before the game.
