LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team fell, 4-3, to the UC San Diego (UCSD) Tritons Thursday at the Northview Tennis Courts.
UCSD (4-10) picked up wins on the first and third doubles courts to secure the 1-0 lead. In their first match together this spring, senior

Yaiza Vazquez dominated for a 6-1 win at No. 2, never trailing in the bout to even up the doubles session at one match a piece. Graduate student
Isabelle Bahr and junior
Marjorie Souza showed good fight at No. 1, coming back from trailing 4-1 to make things tight down 5-4, but the Tritons held on to win.
The Vaqueros (5-6) were competitive as singles action got underway. Bahr captured a swift 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 match to get the Vaqueros on the board. With wins on the fifth and sixth courts, however, UCSD extended its lead to 3-1.
Karren opened the No. 2 match with a good 6-4 win in the first set against
Grace Gamal, but Gamal came back to win the second, 6-2. In the No. 1 and No. 4 matches, Souza and Vazquez bounced back after dropping their first sets to win in the second, sending all three crucial matches to full third sets.
Souza fell 6-2 in her first set to
Kelly Leung, then crushed the second set to the tune of a 6-0 win. Souza came out determined in the third frame, quickly taking a 4-1 advantage and closing the set strong to win, 6-2, and cut UTRGV's deficit to 3-2. But Gamal held on to defeat Karren, 6-3, in the third set, clinching the victory for the Tritons.
Vazquez was beat, 6-2, in the first set on Court Four by
Katelyn Vu, then rallied back in a tight second to take a 6-4 win. The third frame went back-and-forth through the first seven games until Vazquez jumped on top, 4-3, and never looked back as she took the set 6-3 to lock-in her singles win.
UTRGV's next five matches will be at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, starting with a 10 a.m. match Sunday against Morgan State. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
