Gianna Angiolet | Freshman | Shooting Guard | 5-9 | Austin, TX | Westlake High School
One of the top players in Texas comes to UTRGV after a stellar senior season and varsity career at Westlake High School. Angiolet led Westlake in scoring in 2023-24, averaging 18.1 points per game while knocking down 112 three-pointers at a 41% shooting clip as she surpassed the 1,500-career points mark. She also averaged four rebounds per game, 2.8 assists/game and 2.9 steals/game in 34 contests as a senior.
Angiolet racked up awards as she led Westlake to the Region IV-6A semifinals and the District 26-6A Championship as the District MVP. She is the Central Texas Girls Basketball Player of the Year, the All-Austin Metro Offensive Player of the Year, a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-State, All-Region and Academic All-State honoree, and a member of the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) 5A-6A Legacy All-Star Team. Angiolet made the All-District First Team and Academic Team all four years and was the Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.
Angiolet chose UTRGV because she felt comfortable and confident with the coaching staff during her visit and believes in their vision for the team. She will be studying kinesiology.
"Gianna is a talented combo guard that won many significant awards as a senior," Lord said. "Her ability to score at all three levels will be a true asset to our program. Defensively, Gianna can guard multiple positions with her length and quickness."
Madison Huhn | Sophomore | Guard | 5-8 | Carlsbad, CA | Carlsbad High School/Miami (Ohio)
Huhn comes to UTRGV after spending her freshman season at Miami (Ohio), where she competed in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) at the NCAA Div. I level. She was a two-time team captain, an All-Conference First Team selection, and an All-CIF San Diego Section honoree.
Huhn was coached in high school by her mother, Donna, who played basketball at Florida International. Her father, Jay, played football at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Huhn will be majoring in marketing. She chose UTRGV because of the family culture and the belief the coaching staff has in its student-athletes.
"Madison is a shooting guard with unlimited range and scoring ability. She has a great basketball IQ and will bring NCAA Division 1 experience to our program," Lord said.
Kayla Lorenz | Freshman | Guard | 6-0 | Lynnwood, WA | Lynnwood High School
Lorenz joins the Vaqueros after a decorated career at Lynnwood High School in Washington, where she was a four-year letterwinner and served as a team captain all four years. As a senior, she surpassed the 1,000-career points mark and hit a season-high seven three-pointers in a 28-point effort against Thomas Jefferson High School. Lorenz was a three-time team MVP and three-time All-Wesco First Team honoree.
Lorenz will be pursuing a degree in marketing. She chose UTRGV because the instant connection she had with the coaching staff and her future teammates made it feel like home.
"Kayla is a 6-0 wing player that has the ability to score in a variety of ways. She can really shoot the three-point shot and she is physical enough to score through contact. We are excited to welcome Kayla to our program," Lord said.
Elizabeth Romer | Freshman | Guard | 5-11 | Wichita, KS | Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School
Romer was a four-year letterwinner and a 1,000-plus career points scorer. She earned All-State Third Team honors as a senior and was a two-time All-City First Team member. Romer dropped 264 points her senior season with 48 three-pointers. Romer also played volleyball for four years, earning All-City First Team twice and helping her team win the All-City Championship in 2024.
The daughter of Patrick and Cortney, Romer will be pursuing a bachelor's in business administration with a minor in marketing. She chose UTRGV because the team made her feel welcomed and she's excited about the school and athletic department's growth.
"Lizzie is a big-time competitor and a multi-sport athlete that has a tremendous future ahead of her," Lord said. "She has great shooting range and the ability to put the ball on the floor and go score. She is an outstanding defender and has great length at the guard position."
Sophia Zufelt | Freshman | Guard | 5-7 | Coeur d'Alene, ID | Lake City High School
